If you’re cruising from Barcelona, one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean, choosing where to stay before your cruise can make a big difference.
I recommend arriving at least 1–2 days before your cruise, especially if it’s your first visit.
There’s a lot to see, and a quick stop isn’t enough.
Barcelona is a large city, so the right location can save you time and stress on embarkation day, especially with luggage and check-in times.
In this guide, I’ll show you where to stay in Barcelona before a cruise, based on my visits, including the best areas, how they connect to the port, and hotel options in each.

Why It Matters Where You Stay Before a Cruise
Choosing the right area in Barcelona isn’t just about the hotel.
It affects how easy your embarkation day is, how much time you spend getting around, and how much you enjoy the city.
Distance to the Cruise Port
Barcelona has two main cruise terminals:
- World Trade Center (WTC) – used mostly by smaller ships
- Moll Adossat – used by large cruise ships

The WTC terminal is about a 10-minute walk from La Rambla, close to the Gothic Quarter and Plaça de Catalunya.
If your ship departs from Moll Adossat, you’ll need to get there by:
- cruise shuttle from WTC (€3, 5–10 minutes’ ride)
- taxi (fastest and easiest with luggage)
While public transport is excellent, staying farther from the center can slow you down, especially on embarkation day.
That’s why I recommend staying in central areas like the Gothic Quarter, Plaça de Catalunya, Port Vell, or Barceloneta — all close to the port, well-connected, and easy to explore on foot.
Getting from the Airport to Your Hotel or Port
Barcelona El Prat Airport is about 15 km from the port.
Best options:
- Taxi: €45 flat rate to/from the port, 15–25 minutes’ ride
- Aerobus: €7.45 one way / €12.85 return, runs 24/7 with frequent departures, connecting the airport with Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça d’Espanya.

If you’re traveling with others, a taxi often ends up cheaper and much easier with luggage.
From my experience, I stayed near La Rambla, took the Aerobus to Plaça de Catalunya, and walked about 10 minutes to my hotel — quick and simple.
💡 Cruise tip: Arrive at least 1–2 days before your cruise to avoid stress and have time to explore.

Luggage and Check-In Tips
Most hotels in Barcelona have check-in around 2:00 p.m., which can be tricky if you arrive early.
Look for hotels that offer:
- luggage storage
- early check-in (if possible)
💡 Insider tip: If your hotel doesn’t store luggage, use storage services around the city. I used one near Plaça de Catalunya — very convenient and easy.
Staying central also helps.
You can drop your bags and relax at a café while waiting for your room, explore the Gothic Quarter, or grab tapas nearby.
Where to Stay in Barcelona Before a Cruise: Best Neighborhoods
Choosing where to stay in Barcelona before a cruise depends on how close you want to be to the port, transport, and main sights.
Each area offers something different.
Port Vell & Barceloneta
Closest to the cruise port and ideal if you want sea views and an easy start on embarkation day.
- near cruise terminals
- beach, restaurants, and bars nearby
- great for a relaxed, seaside stay

Downside: prices are higher, especially in peak season.
Top hotels in Port Vell / Barceloneta:
- W Barcelona – Luxury beachfront hotel with sea views, close to the port.
- Eurostars Grand Marina – 5-star hotel by the cruise terminals with a rooftop pool and port views.
- H10 Port Vell – Modern 4-star hotel near the marina with a rooftop plunge pool.
- Hotel 54 Barceloneta – Small hotel near the beach, close to both the sea and port.
Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)
A central and historic area with easy access to everything.
- about a 15-minute walk to the WTC terminal
- close to La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya
- lively atmosphere, lots to see on foot
It can be noisy in the evenings.

I stayed here near La Boqueria Market at Hostal Paris — simple, clean, and very central.

Top Gothic Quarter hotels:
- Lamaro Hotel (Colón) – Modern hotel opposite the cathedral, with some of the best views in the Gothic Quarter.
- Hotel Suizo – Simple, clean stay in the Gothic Quarter, just steps from La Rambla.
- The Barcelona Edition – Stylish hotel near the quarter with a rooftop bar and modern design.
🧭While staying near the Gothic Quarter, consider booking a guided walking tour or tapas experience to make the most of your time in Barcelona.
El Raval
A more budget-friendly option next to the Gothic Quarter.
- close to La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya
- good access to the airport and port
- plenty of small hotels and local spots
Some streets can feel less safe at night, so choose a location carefully.
Top El Raval hotels:
- Andante Hotel – Modern, affordable stay with a rooftop pool and good metro access.
- Hotel España Ramblas – Boutique hotel near La Rambla with elegant rooms and a rooftop bar.
- Barceló Raval – Stylish hotel with panoramic views in a central location near MACBA.
Plaça de Catalunya & Eixample (Best Connected Area)
One of the most convenient areas for a short stay before a cruise.
- main transport hub (metro, buses, Aerobus)
- direct connection to the airport
- easy access to the cruise shuttle
To reach the port, take the L3 metro to Drassanes station (bottom of La Rambla), then walk about 10 minutes to the shuttle stop near the WTC terminal.
Eixample is also home to major sights like the Sagrada Família and Passeig de Gràcia, so it works well if you want to explore a bit.
Don’t miss out on Sagrada Família tours and tickets — book ahead to skip the lines and enjoy a hassle-free visit!
Downside: can be busy and noisy, especially around Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla.
Top Catalunya / Eixample hotels:
- 45 Times Barcelona (formerly Iberostar Paseo de Gràcia) – Modern hotel with a rooftop pool and views over Plaça de Catalunya.
- Catalonia Ramblas 4* Sup – Central hotel near Plaça de Catalunya with spacious rooms and a pool.
- H10 Catalunya Plaza – Stylish hotel right on the square, close to transport and shopping.
- Hotel Continental Barcelona – On La Rambla, known for 24/7 snacks and rooms with street views.
- Praktik Èssens – Boutique hotel on Passeig de Gràcia with well-designed rooms and a quiet feel.
- Sercotel Rosellón – Modern hotel near Sagrada Família with a rooftop terrace and direct views of the basilica.

Sants / Montjuïc
A practical and quieter option.
- close to Sants train station and Plaça d’Espanya
- good transport connections (metro, buses, Aerobus)
- easy access to the port
Montjuïc offers green space, views, and attractions like the cable car and castle.

Fewer restaurants and less touristy, but a good choice if you prefer a calmer stay.
Top Sants / Montjuïc hotels:
- Hotel Acta CITY47 – Comfortable hotel near Sants with spacious rooms and good value.
- Barceló Sants – Modern hotel above Sants station, ideal for easy train and port access.
Final Thoughts: Best Area to Stay in Barcelona Before a Cruise
- Port Vell: closest to the port, most convenient
- Gothic Quarter / Plaça de Catalunya: best for sightseeing and central location
- Eixample: quieter, good for families
- El Raval / Sants: more budget-friendly
Choosing the right area will save you time and make embarkation day much easier.
