Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese, is known for its history, beaches, and great food.

In this guide, I’m sharing my personal picks of 7 restaurants in Rhodes Town that I tried and would happily recommend.

Disclaimer: I wasn’t paid or sponsored to write about these Rhodes restaurants. These are my genuine recommendations based on my own experience—I’m simply sharing what I liked. 😊

1. Mama Sofia

Mama Sofia ranks among the best restaurants in Rhodes—and before my visit, I’d read glowing reviews that turned out to be absolutely true!

If you’re looking for an authentic Greek atmosphere, homemade fresh dishes, a great wine selection, and plenty of food options, Mama Sofia is the place to go.

It’s located right in the heart of the medieval Old Town, just behind the Suleymaniye Mosque and the Roloi Tower (also known as the Clock Tower).

Mama Sofia is a family-run restaurant dating back to 1967, well known not just in Rhodes Town but across the island.

My friends and I ate here twice, and everything was spot on—from the warm, friendly service to the relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel welcome right away.

I ordered stuffed squid on the first visit and grilled shrimp the second—both were excellent and easily among the best meals I had in Rhodes.

Prices at Mama Sofia are slightly higher compared to other restaurants in Rhodes, mainly due to its prime location and reputation—but it’s worth every cent!

The staff speaks excellent English, and the menu includes gluten-free and vegetarian options, so there’s something for everyone.

The restaurant is almost always busy, so if you’re visiting during the high season, I highly recommend booking a table in advance, especially for dinner.

2. Archipelagos

Located on Hippocrates Square in Rhodes Old Town, Archipelagos serves great food with views of the medieval walls and lively square.

The menu offers a wide variety of options, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free dishes, as well as both traditional Greek and international cuisine.

Have I mentioned I’m a seafood fan? 😊

Well, here I had the most delicious Mediterranean salad made with smoked salmon, shrimp, honey, lettuce, and several other fresh, flavorful ingredients.

My friends went for traditional Greek dishes—souvlaki and Greek salad—and they absolutely loved them!

The staff at Archipelagos is welcoming and very professional, so you can expect excellent, high-quality service.

Prices are a bit higher than in other parts of Rhodes Town, but the experience and the view make it totally worth it!

The restaurant does get busy, so I recommend booking your spot in advance, especially if you’re coming during peak hours.

3. Barbarossa Seaside

For sea views, a relaxed vibe, and good food, head to Barbarossa Seaside Restaurant on Akti Miaouli Beach, on the west side of Rhodes Town.

This side is usually windy—hence the nickname “the windy beach”—but it’s also one of the best spots on the island for sunsets, with a stretch of beachfront hotels and well-run beach clubs.

One of the restaurants I truly enjoyed was Barbarossa Seaside, and I went there right at sunset… and wow, what an experience!

Just picture this: a fiery sky, perfectly grilled salmon, a glass of delicious local wine, lounge music playing in the background, and a laid-back, beachy vibe.

Sounds like paradise, right? Well—it absolutely was!

Prices at Barbarossa Seaside were quite reasonable—actually a bit lower than what you’d find in Rhodes Old Town.

The guy who served us was incredibly friendly, and to top it off, we were treated to a round of limoncello shots, which was such a nice gesture!

I highly recommend this place and suggest timing your visit for sunset—you’ll get a truly unique and unforgettable experience!

4. Nikos Fish Taverna

Nikos is a charming traditional Greek restaurant just outside the medieval walls, in the modern part of Rhodes Town.

This family-run spot focuses on fresh seafood—and it’s where I had the best squid on the island.

I loved the traditional setting, the wide choice of fish dishes, and the friendly service.

When my squid arrived, a young boy (likely the owner’s son) cut and served it at the table—a fun, authentic touch.

My friend had bean soup and a Greek salad, which she really enjoyed.

The overall experience was fantastic—and after we finished our meal, we were treated to shots of traditional Ouzo and a plate of fresh fruit.

Prices at Nikos are very reasonable, and the quality of the food will definitely exceed your expectations.

Just steps from Rhodes Casino, Elli Beach, and Mandraki Harbour, this family-run bar-restaurant offers a wide menu and great service.

The Star Bar & Grill overlooks Georgiou Papanikolaou Street, where prices are usually lower than in Old Town or around Mandraki Marina.

I went twice and had excellent pizza—easily among the best I tried—plus Mythos craft beer and great cocktails.

6. Jay’s Burger House

Located in the modern part of Rhodes Town, surrounded by hotels, shops, and restaurants, Jay’s Burger House offers a wide menu and great service.

I had gyros here (the only time during my stay), and it was really good.

They also offer set menus (gyros plate, Greek salad, and coffee or ice cream) for around €11, which is great value.

I tried the fried calamari here and it was fresh and flavorful—just the way I like it.

Hans & Gretel: A Sweet Stop for Dessert Lovers

If you love sweets and fairytale-style places, don’t miss Hans & Gretel.

It’s not a restaurant, but it’s a fun stop to end your time in Rhodes.

Located on Hippocrates Square in Rhodes Old Town, it serves artisanal gelato, donuts, chimney cakes, bubble waffles, chocolates, and plenty of candy—all in a playful, storybook setting.

To Wrap Up

Rhodes Town and the island as a whole have plenty of great places to eat.

It’s hard to pick favorites, as most offer good food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere.

These are the spots I personally tried and enjoyed.

I’ll definitely be back to explore more.
