Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas — and if your cruise itinerary includes it, you’ll probably wonder one thing: what should I actually do there, and is it worth paying extra?
I’ve visited CocoCay twice on Royal Caribbean ships, and this guide is based on real time on the island, not brochure promises.
Whether you want a relaxing beach day, a pool with a swim-up bar, or full-on waterpark thrills, CocoCay gives you options — some completely free, others surprisingly expensive if you don’t plan ahead.
CocoCay (formerly Little Stirrup Cay) is located about 55 miles north of Nassau, in the Berry Islands, and it’s used exclusively by Royal Caribbean.
No tender boats, no outside crowds — your ship docks directly at the pier, and the island is designed to handle thousands of cruise passengers at once.
Today, Perfect Day at CocoCay is one of the most popular stops on Royal Caribbean Caribbean itineraries, alongside Nassau and Freeport.
And while it looks small on the map, it’s divided into several zones, each offering a very different experience — from quiet beaches and the massive Oasis Lagoon pool to the adrenaline-packed Thrill Waterpark and the upscale Coco Beach Club.
In this guide, I’ll break down what’s free vs. what costs extra, the best things to do, how to plan your day without feeling rushed, and which experiences are actually worth the money — so you can enjoy CocoCay your way, whether it’s your first visit or your second (or third).
Perfect Day at CocoCay Island Overview
Perfect Day at CocoCay is compact, well-organized, and designed for a one-day cruise stop.
The island is less than a mile long from east to west and under half a kilometer wide, which means you can see a lot without feeling rushed, especially if you plan your day even loosely.
In 2019, Royal Caribbean completely transformed CocoCay from a simple private island stop into a full-scale private destination.
Today, it’s built around choice: relaxing beaches, a massive freshwater pool, high-energy attractions, and plenty of food options — some included in your cruise fare, others available at an extra cost.
Only Royal Caribbean ships visit CocoCay, and up to two ships can dock on the same day. There are no overnight stays yet, but Royal Caribbean has already announced future developments.
🚶 Getting Around CocoCay Island
CocoCay is Royal Caribbean’s private destination and feels safe, clean, and very easy to navigate.
Crew members are spread across the island, always visible and happy to help if you need directions or assistance.
The pier is flat and fully accessible for guests with mobility issues and wheelchair users.
The walk from the ship to the island entrance is short, but if you prefer not to walk, there’s a free tram (golf-cart style) running directly from the pier.
Once on the island, complimentary trams loop around CocoCay every 10–15 minutes, stopping at all major areas, including:
- Arrivals Plaza
- Thrill Waterpark
- Chill Island
- Oasis Lagoon
- South Beach

Drivers will often stop if you wave them down, and several trams are wheelchair accessible. Beach-friendly wheelchairs are also available free of charge at multiple locations around the island.

🏖️ Chill Island & Breezy Bay
Chill Island is the most relaxed beach area on CocoCay and a great choice if you want a classic beach day away from the louder thrill zones.
The beach is long and sandy, with plenty of shade, calm water, and no loud music, ideal for families with kids or anyone looking for a quieter atmosphere.
You’ll find complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, hammocks, lockers, swim vests, freshwater showers, and a first-aid station.
There’s also a Straw Market for souvenirs, the shaded Wacky Seagull bar, and the main Chill Grill restaurant.
Breezy Bay, located on the northern end of Chill Island, offers a slightly more active vibe.
This is where you’ll find sports courts (volleyball and basketball) and a Snack Shack for quick bites. Water activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet ski tours are available here for an extra cost.
🍔 Chill Grill & Skipper’s Grill
CocoCay has two main complimentary buffet-style restaurants:
- Chill Grill – located near Chill Island
- Skipper’s Grill – centrally located between Oasis Lagoon and Harbor Beach
Both offer Windjammer-style food with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, tacos, salads, fruit, desserts, and drink stations. Restaurants typically open around 11:30 am and close mid-afternoon.
Skipper’s Grill has a nice outdoor deck with views over Harbor Beach, making it a good lunch stop if you’re spending time near the pool or calmer beaches.
🏊 Oasis Lagoon
Oasis Lagoon is the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and one of CocoCay’s main attractions — and it’s completely free to use.
The pool is located in the center of the island and features:
- A swim-up bar
- In-water loungers (first-come, first-served)
- Complimentary chairs and umbrellas
- DJ music and a lively atmosphere
It’s a great spot if you want a resort-style pool day without paying for a beach club or cabana.
🌴 South Beach
South Beach is my favorite beach on CocoCay. To get there, you walk through a short, jungle-style path, which makes it feel a bit more secluded and less busy than some of the other areas.
The beach itself is wide and sandy, with complimentary loungers and umbrellas, a bar, and a Snack Shack close by. It’s easy to enjoy a relaxed beach day here without spending anything extra.
One of the highlights is the floating bar, where you can stand in shallow water and grab a drink (the selection is limited, usually beer and soft drinks).
Cabanas and premium seating are available for an additional fee, but they’re completely optional — the free setup is comfortable and more than enough for most visitors.
🌊 Harbor Beach
Harbor Beach is a calm, sheltered inlet located near Skipper’s Grill and Oasis Lagoon. With no waves and shallow water, it’s a great option for:

👧 Splashaway Bay & Captain Jill’s Galleon
Just outside the Thrill Waterpark, Splashaway Bay is a free water play area for kids, featuring fountains, mini slides, buckets, and water cannons.
Benches and shaded seating make it easy for parents to relax nearby.
Captain Jill’s Galleon is another complimentary splash area, designed as a life-size pirate ship with slides, tunnels, and interactive water features. Both areas are very popular with younger children.
🛍️ Straw Market
The Straw Market is located on Chill Island and offers locally made souvenirs, t-shirts, hats, and Bahamian-themed items.
Vendors are friendly and not pushy, which makes browsing relaxed compared to some other Caribbean ports.
Cash is recommended, though some stalls may accept SeaPass cards or credit cards.

🏖️ Coco Beach Club
Coco Beach Club is CocoCay’s most exclusive area, offering a calm, resort-style atmosphere with a private beach, an infinity pool, and an upscale dining experience.
Access requires a day pass, which includes:
- Entry to the Coco Beach Club
- Use of the infinity pool and private beach
- Complimentary loungers and umbrellas
- Access to the exclusive restaurant
Food is included with the day pass, but drinks are extra unless you have a Royal Caribbean drink package, which works here like elsewhere on the island.
The infinity pool features in-pool loungers available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is recommended.
Capacity is limited (especially when two ships are in port), and it’s best to pre-book both your day pass and restaurant lunch time before the cruise.
If you pre-book, you’ll receive a letter in your stateroom explaining how access works on the island.
Coco Beach Club Cabanas (Extra Fee)
Booking a cabana includes complimentary admission to Coco Beach Club. Both cabana types are wheelchair accessible.
